what to expect on the path ahead

The path to well-being is different for every person

and branches in all directions.

The roadmap below is less of a rigid step-by-step plan and more like a general guide to help you visualize the mental health counseling process.

Informed consent is your right as a client.

assessing your growth

Assessing Your Growth

As we make progress in therapy, it's good to stop every once in awhile to check in on how far we've come. This gives us an opportunity to also decide if what we are doing is actually working - or if things need to change.

the intake session

The Intake Session

Our first session is called an Intake. We will spend about 90 minutes in session talking about what is bringing you to therapy, goals you may have, and problems getting in the way. This is also time we use to complete paperwork as needed.

closing out

Closing Out

Sometimes, we will come to the end of the road we've been on and realize it's time to part ways. That's a normal part of the therapy process. If you sense that time coming, we will talk about your transition out of therapy and what that might look like.

treatment plan

Treatment Plan

Over the next 1-2 sessions following intake, we will collaborate on what you want the path ahead to look like, what obstacles you foresee, and laying down a roadmap for how we get you where you want to be.

a new path

A New Path

After a break from therapy, you may have reason to return once more to engaging in this challenging, yet fulfilling work. You are always welcome to reach out after we've ended services, no matter how much time has passed.

code of ethics

The American Counselor's Association (ACA) Code of Ethics (2014) is the most recent edition that mental health counselors adhere to in their practice. The link above takes you directly to the free pdf viewable in most browsers.
